Here's some new work I made for our show Beast.
1. We vs street harassers
This is for anyone who has ever been hassled by some creep
in the street, (or nightclub/ tube/ other public space). While it confrontation
may be unwise because the creep might retaliate with violence, or otherwise
giving you a lurgy, I found it helpful to make a list of things I would like to
shout back at them, had I the fortune of being sat in a tank, and blissfully
imagine myself doing so. There’s also sites like this, so you know you’re not alone: www.stopstreetharassment.org/
From before birth, we are bombarded with images of the
“ideal woman” c/o Disney and other agents of patriarchy, to programme us to
shut up and look pretty. I’m reclaiming them. Feeling gorgeous is cool, but
some enraged bellowing is also good for one’s circulation.
2. Tiger Grrrl
I get really upset + angry reading about adult humans using
their power and position to take advantage of vulnerable people, particularly
older and younger people. Most of the time, the sufferer is female. This girl
conveys the idea/wish/hope that even though you are small, you have the
strength and courage to believe in yourself and make a noise.
3. Leave Me Alone
This is a character called LH who has a Dorothy Parker hairdo.
So far LH has featured in
comic stories about insomnia, grocer boys and
doctors. Here she is storming through the streets ignoring the tiny pests that
slither at her feet.
4. Skeleton Woman
Every woman has a skeleton woman side. Skeleton Woman represents
general human imperfections, crankiness, inner conflicts, anxieties, dark
secrets, hardness, voids. There is a story about the Skeleton Woman in “Women
who Run with the Wolves” which tells how the true lover is one who overcomes
fear and horror of Skeleton Woman, by transforming these
feelings to compassion and tenderness.
5. Medusa walks into
a hairdressers…
6. We are celebrating
